Spoopy Progress Report
Hey Boo,
Another month and another report.
Look at all the things I did! Those sure are some things.
On the day I'm writing this. I got twelve renders posed and put in the queue. It took me a while to get into it and I think that is just how I work. It is very similar to how I get into writing but writing seems to feel like it pays off more. Probably not, who cares.
I don't think it is a good or bad thing. It is just a thing that I have to get through in order to make stuff.
Development Question
How have you planned out the storyline and how do you work that into development?
Great question. I do all the things at once, in the worst way possible.
Well, I start with things that I think should happen and the characters are driving themselves to. These things are hinted at by genre and story conventions. When you read a murder mystery, you get a stupid amount of details about the characters, and then one of them dies and then there is lots of information sorting. Writing a story about a lonely person without purpose, the story will lead them to connect with other people and get entangled with their lives and beliefs, for example.
I do start rendering images at this point. Creating locations, searching for assets, and making renders for things that will be useful in a variety of ways. I render things the whole time because doing work that excites me seems to be the fastest way things get done.
At the same time, I put things in an outline along with whatever flashes of dialogue or actions come to mind. Then I can tweak the structure and connecting tissue.
Then I start writing in earnest and I write it out the code to the game too because it helps keep things organized. It takes a little more time than normal writing but it saves adding code later or getting lost in story paths.
a "I want banans"
#choice coding words
"give banana"
jump banan_time
"Focus, the Countess has been Murdered!"
a "Oh, I forgot
#end choice
*I keep writing*
label banan_time:
*I write later*
Whenever there is a path, I stick the label for that down the word doc to find later and continue the story. I have an outline but I write by the seat of my pants. I don't plan out every topic and every conversation. I just through the characters together and keep the themes in mind. Then, I don't make choices. Whenever there is something that could go a few ways instead of bothering with choising one, I make a path for the player.
Once everything is written out I start planning out the images by adding them to the script and adding them to an additional word file where I am tracking what I have made. This is more coding with the *show* keyword.
show grace confused
a "Why can't I have a banana?"
show grace mad
a "We will have two dead bodies if you don't feed me!"
Well, "grace mad" and "grace confused" get a finished image named after them or they go on my list assets to make.
Once the entire script has image names, it can be pasted into ren'py and I only need to troubleshoot it, ideally. Editing and revisions happen throughout.
Then I have only to make my way through the list of image names and make them. Which, is the current stage that I have been at for a while.
Happy Halloween!
I always feel like I am about to get things out
