2024 Devlog April Choices bring Consiquences

Hey Boo,

It feels like we are rounding out the end of the visual works. The fraction isn't complete. I'm running low on the worst part and not it's getting close to time to throw everything that together and fixing the broken stuff.

Progress
I'm still going hard with making art on my own. I almost hit two hundred sense last report. I'm not going to be sad about 171 more renders. I envy the people who are able to make things faster.

My Choices Thoughts and Philosophy

There are a lot of ways people do choices in games. Some do a matter of degrees and some on off path choices. Apparently, there are places in Eternum where people can miss lewd scenes but still be on girl’s paths. It’s only pivotal choices that you are fully aware of because the girl’s path disappears.

I try to put myself in the players shoes. Two-for-one, I don't like internal narration from the main characters POV. When there is a point in the story where it would make sense for the MC to clearify thier thoughts, I put it in a choice. Oh, I hate that or I love that. There are hidden points and

Cliff Hanger Choices
Scenes are supposed to do something narratively significant. At the end of a scene, the fallout from the actions of the scene should be felt. Then the chapter or POV can switch and leave the audience wanting to return the the storyline. Some people also use choices to cap off their chapters and time jumps. So, you’d never see the results of a major choice for a few story beats. Which obscures the cause and effect of things. It is rude to people who like to maximise choices. But it's a pretty good idea to merge the narritive and mechanical momentem.

The TOP Option, Dummy
In killer7's games, you can say no to love interests and you just won’t date them anymore, and you can say no to events, you just skip the event. It’s a softer cozy game. K7 has his "hit the top option" guide. If you want to see the content, just hit the top option. This speaks to me as someone who hates explaining things and repeating myself.

To an extent I do this. I do want people to read the options and I don't want them to be afraid of the alternating paths. I hide jokes and dialogue everywhere.
But I am a chaos goblin. Sometimes I forget. I FORGET. Like an idiot. I think I had a bad choice in chapter one and found it in the top option. I fix these if I find them but I don't like to change the script in already released portions of the game in a line to line basis because that cna mess up saves.

Blind Choices
Some games you don't know what choices mean. It can be done in two ways. There can be hard flags for choices or there can be number value.
"Do you wear the blue or brown pants?" Then blue kills you eight chapters later. This is a hard flag that you didn't know had consiquecences and might have seemed silly.
"I like your dress (Plus four points for Bea)" Points can be hidden in any choice and add up. This can add customization and randomness to what choices are made.

People were really mad at triple x when a blind choice in a weird wrestling move choices could get the daughter shot. I didn't love it but I could roll back and the ending was fixed.

Naughty Captain’s game, you need a high enough score for both girls, when they find out about each other, or things get complicated.

The Single Choice
This guy is contraversial because some people use it for no reason. A similar cousin might be the greyed out choice. Either way, there is no option.

This can be used for emphasis. If you don't have a choice but might not be a thing the player wants to do then it can help build tension. I think about the ending of Snake Eater, where Snake holds a gun to Boss's head but won't pull the trigger until the player does. It makes you wait, staring at flowers and thinking about the story themes.

A greyed out choice, leaving you one real option might show other paths. Like in Now and Then and Summer Heat where it gives hints for other play styles that open different paths.
It is also a consiquence. In Being a Dik if you have too much dik or chick points, you don't have access to certain options.

Consiquences
Sometimes it bares out normal. You punch a guy and he bleeds and you have an enimy for the rest of the game. Sometimes, there are fals choices. Axel will always hate and bully you in Eternum, even if you are nice.

In Wilson’s own work. The clearest maybe choices are the one night stands that result in getting brushed up with a main love interest.
If you fuck the library girl, best girl sees it.
If you fuck the car chick, a girl is alone too long, gets sad, and has a panic attack.

Those are clear consequence but it’s unclear whether it will have a lasting effect on the story. But it might fight against the genre and stated purpose of the game.
On one end, you have the genre, which is about having fun consequence free sex and getting to know a lot of characters, plus the game explicitly tells you in the text to relax and sleep around.
But on the other hand, there are flags that these things aren’t just silly fun, which you feel in character reactions. The unknown choice restricts fun. They get framed with the contrary idea that the mc might not have time to have sex now but the point of the game is to have some sex.

It's all building up to the MC being bloody on the street and all the girls herding together being unsure about who should be concerned.

Sometimes the consiquences are always the same. Some people refer to it as a false choice. It is just a split in some words that lead to the same thing.
In Avalon, the false choices or dialogue only choices are marked with a symblo to let you know you can read several jokes.
There was a fun thing in Double Homework, where choices would be interupted as a character injected themselves into the scene. A narritive and mechanical false choice, which was also funny.

It's about the player
I had a player freaked out over Candied Oblivion because he wasn't sure what choice to pick and he didn't know what would happen. CO is supposed to be a comedy and a silly game. There are no bad choices, it should all be fun and lead to something neat being said, otherwise I tried to make clear flags for skipping a section if it's not an interesting topic.

Everyone has difference tollerance levels. Some fixes are having mods that show values of choices but optimizing feels less fun and boring to me.

ALL THESE THINGS

Everything can be bad when not used with the right amount of thought or when a chaos goblin just throws them in.
The single choice can be annoying if it is just deployed.
Some people want to play the game and don't want to worry about following a guide to open up parts of the game.

It comes down to a lack of established genres and the independence of artists. There is a low barrier to entry for making AVNs. With ai, it's almost a slope.
There are incentives to make games longer or more complicated so that a short cut can be sold to the player.

These are tools for use to use. I use points and hard flags. I use choices to hide optional jokes. I have multiple paths. Then, if you are ever in doubt, you can hit that top option, always (probably). But you can make mistakes. There is flexibility in my system but rewards for doing well paying attention the characters and maybe exploring the possibilities narratively.
Some love paths will have a yes or no. Some love paths can start early. Some love paths can start later. Some love paths can be shut down if you ignore something the character really, really cares about.

But not until the of chapter 2.

Rewards
I forgot I made a bunch of specail renders for Easter. I was thinking that rewards would be light but I lewded some bunnies-girls in and out of bunny suits. Then there are some pictures of Cindy and some Shadows. I have special renders posted on the third Wednesday of every month for all 18+ tiers. This is going to be another thin month for pinups.
